Public Forum on Casino Design

On May 24th 2006, hundreds gathered to learn about the casinos that will have an indelible imprint on Philadelphia. This free public forum, the beginning of a public conversation, was held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, and co-hosted by The Daily News and Penn Praxis with additional media support provided by WHYY.

Each of the five casino developers commented on their plans, discussed how they would be integrated into the urban landscape and the day-to-day life of the city. An expert panel of design experts offered reactions, and the public raised questions about the designs. Harris Steinberg, board president of Penn Praxis, moderated the event. The expert panel included:

  • Genie Birch, chair of the Department of City and Regional Planning at the Penn School of Design
  • Winka Dubbeldam, principal at Archi-Tectonics in New York City and associate practice professor at Penn
  • Alan Greenberger, principal at MGA Architects in Philadelphia and co-founder of the Design Advocacy Group
  • Bob Hillier, principal at Hillier Architecture in Princeton University
  • Sarah Thorp, PennDesign Preservation grad and a Fishtown activist.
