What is By The People?
By the People: America in the World, a new initiative of MacNeil/Lehrer Productions, aims to energize and enhance the national conversation on America's role in the world through a series of national and local broadcasts and events that demonstrate the relevance of foreign policy issues to local concerns. The project includes national PBS specials, local programming to be produced by PBS stations in cooperation with community organizations, national and local forums for civic dialogue, and an interactive web site.

The Impact of Immigration in the Philadelphia Region
A strategic plan to attract immigrants to Philadelphia could help bring the long-term economic and quality of life benefits that immigration has brought to other major cities such as New York, Boston and Seattle. But, without question, high levels of immigration also bring cultural and economic tensions and tradeoffs.
The Impact of Immigration in the Philadelphia Region brings together diverse citizens to deliberate on and evaluate a hypothetical proposal to attract immigrants to Philadelphia. Experts in immigration law, the cultural impact of immigration and the economic issues will set up the morning's discussion, then help sort out the results of the citizen deliberation.
The Impact of Immigration in the Philadelphia Region is a project of the national media initiative By the People: America in the World, a continuing effort to encourage civic engagement that connects issues of globalization to local communities.
