Capture
By Rolando Morales-Matos, for percussion quartet and narrator set to poetry by Catalino Rios. The Philadelphia Orchestra Percussion Group, which commissioned this work about the slave trade in an African village, performs this rip-roaring percussion piece with the poet as narrator.

Bach, Blues and Beyond
By violin great Diane Monroe: a solo improvisation celebrating the fascinating intersections between classical music and jazz.

Two Miniatures
By Oberlin professor Jeffrey Mumford: an elegant duo for violin and piano, with performers Diane Monroe and Linda Reichert.

New! Gifted & Black

In collaboration with Network for New Music, Art Sanctuary presents New! Gifted & Black a celebration of the rich expression of African-American artists, with the moving voice of tradition and mastery, the heat of Afro-Cuban percussion, and the spirit of dance.

World Premier: Sunday, March 21, 2004, 3 p.m. at Art Sanctuary
This concert features the first African-American Pulitzer prize winning composer George Walker, violinist Diane Monroe, story-teller Charlotte Blake Alston, dance choreographer Eva Gholson, the Philadelphia Orchestra Percussion Group, and dancer Tim Early.
Admission: $5; children 17 and younger admitted free

Student Workshop: Monday, March 22, 2004, 10 a.m. at Art Sanctuary
Performances of three works by African American and Latino composers: violinist Diane Monroe; Oberlin professor Jeffrey Mumford and percussionist Rolando Morales-Matos. Following the performances, students will have the opportunity to ask the musicians and composers questions.
