Hispanic Fiesta

Hispanic Fiesta

Concilio founded the Penn's Landing Hispanic Fiesta in 1981. It is a two-day showcase of Puerto Rican and Latino culture at Philadelphia's waterfront. In addition to the Familia Saludable Health Fair, one can sit back and enjoy the cool rhythms and melodious harmonies of mariachis, salsa, merengue, bachata, zamba, cumbia and flamenco. If the culinary art is more your style, one can savor dozens of traditional dishes available from the many food kiosks.

American Family - Journey Of Dreams

American Family - Journey Of Dreams

American Family, PBS' widely acclaimed drama, returned to broadcast television in April on Sundays at 7:00 p.m. (see episodes on TV12 on July 4 and July 11), with the Gonzalez clan celebrating the wedding of one son while confronting their worst fears as another goes off to war. Starring Academy Award(r) nominee Edward James Olmos, Constance Marie, Yancey Arias, Jesse Borrego, Patricia Velasquez, Kate del Castillo and Raquel Welch, with special guest stars Esai Morales, Lynn Whitfield and Rachel Ticotin, and special appearances by Sonia Braga, the second season juxtaposes the Gonzalez family's story against the broad sweep of contemporary history.

Familia Saludable Health Fair

WHYY and American Family - Journey of Dreams present Familia Saludable Health Fair

Familia Saludable Health Fair

Area residents can have fun and learn about good health at the same time at the Familia Saludable (Healthy Family) Health Fair, Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11 from noon to 8 p.m. during Concilio's Hispanic Fiesta. The Fiesta is located at the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, Columbus Boulevard at Chestnut Street in Philadelphia. Admission is free.

The Familia Saludable Health Fair, aimed at improving healthy living in the Latino community, will feature educational events, exhibits and entertainment. Workshops throughout the day will cover such topics as diabetes, nutrition, smoking, and physical fitness. There will be a dance workshop by Grupo Fuego (Group of Fire), incorporating salsa dancing as a way to get in shape. Participating organizations include the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association, American Lung Association, Esperanza Health Center and many more. Informational handouts will be available as well.

This Health Fair is a new feature of the Concilio Hispanic Fiesta. This annual festival attracts over 30,000 people from across the tri-state area. It features music, dance, entertainment, ethnic foods and artisan crafts from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia, and other Latin American countries.

Familia Saludable is a follow-up to WHYY's Latina Salud multimedia project in 2002 that investigated how cultural barriers affect the ability of Latinas in the Philadelphia region to obtain adequate medical care. The Health Fair is presented by WHYY and American Family - Journey of Dreams with additional funding from GlaxoSmithKline, which is also supporting a new series of WHYY-TV spots on health care.

Major funding for the American Family - Journey of Dreams television series is provided by Johnson & Johnson, the American Legacy Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS.
