Afghanistan's first post-war election will be held in October. We'll get an update on the situation in Afghanistan as it relates to the human rights, the Karzai administration, reconstruction, security, feuds between tribal warlords and the economy from Sarah Chayes former NPR reporter who is in Kandahar, and Barnett Rubin, NYU Afghan expert and author of The Fragmentation of Afghanistan. Photojournalist Ron Haviv has covered the invasion of Panama, cocaine wars in Columbia, famine in Somalia, the Balkan conflict and war in the Afgahnistan and Iraq. His photographs have been published in several books -- Blood and Honey, Afghanistan: The Road to War, and the recently published War, a collection of photographs from the U.S., Afghanistan and Iraq. What's happening in Afghanistan these days? Are we still fighting? Who's in control? We'll get an update from Sarah Chayes, field director for Afghans for Civil Society, and Thomas Gouttierre, director of the Center for Afghanistan Studies at the University of Nebraska. [Listen]

As winter nears, the need for humanitarian assistance in Afghanistan is instensifying. Afgan officials say that foreign aid has been slow to arrive. What are the challenges donor nations and relief organizations face in meeting their their promises? Guests are James Dobbins, former special envoy to Afghanistan, Kevin Henry of CARE, and Peter Walker, director of the Feinstein School of Nutrition and Policy at Tufts University. [Listen]

Afghanistan update. As refugees return to their homes, we'll talk about conditions in Afghanistan --political and humanitarian. Our guests are Tom Simons former Ambassador to Pakistan and Marina Mateen spokesperson for the Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan. [Listen]

Learn the personal stories of the filmmakers under the oppression of the Taliban, and hear of their hope for a new, better future for women in Afghanistan.

Special guest Trudy Rubin, columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, will add insights from her travels in the region. WHYY host Tracy Matisak will moderate audience discussion and Q & A.
