How often has your child asked you to read the same book over and over to them? How many times has your first or second grader taken the same book out of the library? Like many children your child has probably done these things close to a dozen times if not more. You have heard how much your child likes their favorite book now we want to know WHYY they like the book. With Verizon's generous support WHYY launched their WHYY I Like This Book Contest on November 1, 2008. The contest is open to children in kindergarten up to the 12th grade. Once on the site you will be directed to apply by clicking on your child's appropriate grade level and following the directions from there you can submit your child's application. Winners of the contest will be announced in the spring of 2009. The winners of each grade category will have the opportunity to be seen on WHYY telling viewers why it is they like the book they chose. These television segments will begin airing summer 2009.
WHYY has a great deal of programming focusing on literacy. One particular program that can assist children in their book selection is Between the Lions. This show aimed at children ages 3-7 illustrates just how adventurous reading can be. The show uses music and celebrities familiar to parents to keep them entertained while their children are learning. The show as well as the website www.pbskids.org/lions offer a variety of techniques used to teach children phonics. Most of the show takes place in a library, where the characters (a family of lions) demonstrate the joy that lies within the lines of a book.
