Mother's Day

By Yessenia Z. Garcia-Lebrón, Manager — WHYY's Children's Service

Did you wrap the gift? Don't forget the flowers. Do you remember what perfume she likes? The perfect card is a must! Mother's Day is around the corner and everyone, from school teachers preparing projects with children to fathers picking the perfect gift is scurrying around for to find mom exactly what she wants. But, what does mom really want for Mother's Day anyway? Did anyone take time to ask her?

For many moms, a typical week is packed with morning wake up calls, breakfast, car pools, packing lunches, homework, getting kids to practice, washing clothes, making doctors appointments, dinner, bedtime routines and so much more. Sometimes, simplicity works best and giving mom a day to relax is just what is wished for.

This month, join Maya, from the popular PBS series, Maya and Miguel, as she creates something special for her "mamá" on Mother's Day. The day ends with the twins going back to the drawing board at the last minute.

VIEW

This month, be sure to stay tuned for the 1 hour Mother's Day Special on Monday, May 15th at 3:00pm. Weekly, Maya & Miguel can be seen during its new time at 3:30pm.

DO

Every mom secretly wishes for a little more time on her side, a stolen moment to relax. Make a gift certificate book with coupons that give her just that!

Materials Needed:
Construction Paper
Markers, Colored Pencils or Gel Pens
Scissors
Ruler
Decorations (glitter, gems, pictures, ribbons, etc.)
Hole Puncher
Ribbon or Decorative Twine

Start out by having your child pick 5 - 10 pieces of different colored construction paper. Have them cut out 4' by 6' sheets of construction paper. On each sheet, encourage your child to write a message (eg. "This gift certificate entitles you to a night of no lunch packing" or "Redeem this gift certificate for 1 hour of free time"). Don't forget the cover page! Once you have all the gift certificates made, use a three ring hole puncher to make holes in each paper. Choose ribbon or twine to tie the sheets together in the form of a booklet. Make simple bows or knots so that mom can easily redeem the certificates inside. The glitter glue, gems and pictures can be used to add personalized, finishing touches. Present mom this special gift wrapped up in tissue paper or a decorated box and mom will enjoy her perfect gift long after Mother's Day has come and gone.
