Holiday Specials

By Yessenia Garcia-Lebron, WHYY's Children's Service

Winter is here! Just the word brings to mind the holidays, family, games and let's not forget--snow! Do you remember as a child anxiously awaiting that first day of snow? Do you remember sitting by the window with your eyes glued to the sky? And when the small, spectacular flakes whirled into your hands it seemed like nothing could be greater. Well this winter, you and your children will be entertained by many from the PBS cast celebrating winter and its many characteristics. Bob the Builder, Arthur, Maya & Miguel and Thomas the Engine have specials during December that will be feature "pop up" facts and where children will extend their learning about fun, creative inside ideas on a snowed in day, winter stories & holiday customs.

DO

The family gatherings around the holidays can be a special time to create memories and your children will remember these times for years. Taking pictures of family members not seen throughout the year, capturing the snowman built after the first snow fall or taking shots of your children while they interact with family members seem routine, but when your children look back at them, the memories always bring a smile. Making a collage or scrapbook using the holiday cards that are sent and combining it with these pictures, is a great way to capture those moments & remember them for years to come.

What you'll need:

  • Recycled holiday cards
  • Cardboard
  • Glue stick
  • scissors
  • pictures

If your child is old enough to use a camera (disposable are good for younger children), let them take pictures during upcoming holiday gatherings. They can take posed pictures or surprise poses. Using cardboard or a scrapbook as your canvas, you and your child can decorate the background with the recycled holiday cards. Then have your child cut out pictures and glue them on to the background. If your child is old enough to write down thoughts or what's going on in the picture, encourage them to do so in their voice. If you child is too young, ask them what they remember and make a note of it on their work or art. You will have fun looking back at memories created and captured.
