WHYY for Kids

En-cour-age-ment
For children with learning disabilities, such reading fundamentals as sounding out words and sentences can be impossible to master. Enter Reading Rocks!, a dynamic new special aimed at boosting the esteem of struggling readers by introducing them to others who have overcome reading difficulties to achieve their goals.

Reading Rocks! combines wacky humor and a hip-hop soundtrack with inspiring stories from a young author with dyslexia; kids who created a claymation movie about a character with reading disabilities; and an elementary school student who can now read chapter books thanks to the help of peer tutoring.

In May, Reading Rocks! will launch a companion Web site with interactive games, reading tips, and collectible "trading cards" of celebrities who have become successful despite reading difficulties. -- Anna Christopher

Reading Rocks! airs Monday, April 5 at 2:30 p.m.
