Movies of the Month

On Saturday, March 27, two movies on TV12 celebrate women who face any situation with strength and determination and aren't afraid to speak their minds:

Mrs. MiniverMrs. Miniver (1942)
Green Garson won an Academy Award for her role as the title character in this sentimental portrayal of one upper-class English family's experiences during World War II. The film, which also won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, follows the lives of the family members as they valiantly struggle to maintain their British traditions with grace and aplomb despite the many hardships of war. Walter Pidgeon, Teresa Wright, and Reginald Owen also star. 8 p.m.

The Women (1939)
1939 was a particularly good year for movies (The Wizard of Oz, Gone With the Wind, etc.) and this screen adaptation of the 1936 play by Clare Boothe Luce was no exception. Starring Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer and Rosalind Russell, the story revolves around a group of scheming social climbers hell-bent on destroying their best friends' reputations. Despite having the tagline "It's all about men!," the film is really an intimate and hilarious look at the complicated relationships between women and takes a satirical look at matrimony, with classic performances by the leading ladies. 10:15 p.m.
