TV12 Movie of the Month
Show Boat (1951)
This epic musical, which includes such beloved songs as "Make Believe," "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" and "Ol' Man River," centers on the lives and loves of a theater troupe aboard Captain Andy Hawks' Mississippi show boat the Cotton Blossom. The trip is anything but smooth sailing when the show's star Julie (Ava Gardner), who is half black, and her white husband are forced to leave the boat because interracial marriages are forbidden in the deep south, and Captain Andy's daughter Magnolia (Kathryn Grayson) falls hopelessly in love with inveterate gambler Gaylord Ravenal (Howard Keel). -- Mary Eileen O'Connor
