Equality Forum

WHYY broadcasts the International Gay and Lesbian Leaders Symposium live on Radio Times
Edited by Jennifer Fletcher

Marty Moss-Coane will serve as moderator of the 8th annual International Gay and Lesbian Leaders Symposium, part of Philadelphia's weeklong Equality Forum (formerly known as PrideFest America), during the Radio Times broadcast on Friday, May 2.

The Equality Forum is an annual gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) symposium and festival, and includes a full week of events during which national and regional leaders explore the broad range of compelling issues facing these communities.

Moss-Coane will lead an in-depth discussion with a panel of experts, including Evan Wolfson, executive director, Freedom to Marry Project; Lord Mayor Klaus Wowereit from Berlin, Germany; Kate Kendell, executive director, National Center for Lesbian Rights; and Elizabeth Birch, executive director, Human Rights Campaign (HRC).

In the first half of the symposium, the group will discuss the implications of the laws banning sodomy and the Supreme Court's upcoming rulings on these laws. In the second hour of the broadcast, the group explores Germany's attitude toward gays and lesbians, how the country's policies have changed considerably since the days of the Holocaust and what Americans can learn from this country and its progressive culture of tolerance.
