Legendary LadiesWHYY celebrates Women's History Month on TV12
This month, WHYY celebrates Women's History Month with special programs on TV12 that honor influential and creative women and focus on women's issues and themes:
Alice Waters and Her Delicious Revolution This American Masters program profiles the former Berkeley, California hippie who became a noted chef and activist and who is revolutionizing the way Americans think about food with her simple, organic meals and her now-famous Chez Panisse restaurant. Thursday, March 20 at 9 p.m.
Through a combination of five years of extensive field research and film shot in China, Burma, Laos, Thailand, New York and Washington, the program investigates the horrid conditions faced by minority girls and women from Burma, Laos and China who are sold into the sinister sex trade and explores the international response to the issue. Thursday, March 20 at 10 p.m. Christina Cooks "Women and Soy" Christina Pirello prepares some delicious soy recipes and discusses the benefits that women can derive from including soy in their diets. Saturday, March 22 at 2 p.m. Stage on Screen: The Women Kristen Johnston, Rue McClanahan, Cynthia Nixon and Jennifer Tilly star as gold-digging, scheming, gossiping socialites in the Roundabout Theatre Company's hit Broadway revival of Clare Boothe Luce's classic comedy about a group of women who compete in a no-holds-barred survival of the fittest. Saturday, March 22 at 11:40 p.m. Rebecca Lukens: Woman of Iron The program, produced locally by Nightingale Productions, profiles this 19th-century wife, mother and businesswoman, who became the head of what is still a thriving steel mill located on the banks of the Brandywine River in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Throughout the program, local actress Christie Parker portrays the inspirational woman industrialist. Friday, March 28 at 10 p.m. Women of Wisdom and Power III: The Power Within Gloria Steinem, Alanis Morissette, Naomi Wolf, Shirley MacLane, and other influential women offer various techniques for finding balance through self-empowerment while also effecting change. Friday, March 28 at 11 p.m. Carole King: A New Color in the Tapestry In this 1993 concert, the award-winning singer-songwriter is joined by the Voices of Jubilation gospel choir, her daughter Sherry Goffin, and former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash to perform some of her most popular songs, including "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman" and "You've Got a Friend." Sunday, March 30 at 1:30 p.m. MWAH! The Best of the Dinah Shore Show This program celebrates the legacy of the former "Queen of Primetime TV" through footage of some of the greatest moments from her groundbreaking The Dinah Shore Chevy Show -- which include her duets with Pearl Bailey, George Burns, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, Mahalia Jackson, Peggy Lee, Jack Lemmon, Groucho Marx and Frank Sinatra -- and new interviews with those closest to her. Sunday, March 30 at 5 p.m.
