WHYY Advantage

Make lifelong learning a priority in the New Year
Edited by Mary Eileen O'Connor

In today's intensely competitive business environment, it is more important than ever for professionals to have an edge.

WHYY's Adult Learning Service provides professional and personal development resources to residents of the Delaware Valley through WHYY Advantage and allows individuals to receive college credit through the WHYY Home College Service.

Helping employees stay one step ahead
Employees throughout the region can learn important lessons directly from some of the world's best business and thought leaders through live, in-studio presentations and interactive satellite conferences at the WHYY Technology Center.

This spring, WHYY presents a variety of dynamic leaders both live in the Independence Foundation Civic Space and via satellite, including former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, author of the new book Leadership; FISH! guru and best-selling author Dr. Stephen Lundin, who demonstrates how to build a world-class organization; Noel Tichy; Dr. Laree Kiely; Bob Nelson; and Gary Hamel. A list of upcoming WHYY Advantage events will be published in the February issue of Applause.

Using technology to teach new skills
WHYY has partnered with the Workforce Investment Boards of Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties to install 20 computers with built-in digital tuners at various locations throughout the four counties.

WHYY will use its digital TV signal to broadcast adult basic education material directly to these computers, providing entry-level workers with the essential skills they need to move into the workforce or to complete high school equivalency requirements.

Reaching out to distance learners
WHYY is one of the nation's largest providers of Home College classes, allowing students with busy schedules to earn credit toward their college degree. Students can register through a participating college and complete courses online or by recording and watching the courses that air overnight on TV12. The spring 2003 semester begins Monday, February 3.
