One Year Later

WHYY remembers 9/11

This month, people across the region will pause to remember those who lost their lives on September 11 and reflect on the momentous changes that have occurred in our world during the past year.

WHYY is presenting a variety of programs that relate to the events of that fateful day and its aftermath. On September 11, WHYY TV12 will air its regular daytime lineup of children's programming with commemorative programs beginning at 7:30 p.m.

New York: A Documentary Film Five years in the making, filmmaker Ric Burns' documentary chronicles the history of New York City, from the arrival of the Dutch in the early 17th century to life in the year 2000, before the events of September 11 changed the city forever. The series begins Sunday, September 1 at 2 p.m. and concludes Sunday, September 8.

Faith and Doubt at Ground Zero Thousands of people have visited Ground Zero to pray and seek answers to such questions as: Where was God on September 11? In this Frontline special, people of all faiths and from all walks of life, including survivors of the attacks, discuss how their beliefs have been challenged and changed. Tuesday, September 3 at 9 p.m. and Wednesday, September 11 at 8 p.m.

Test of Courage: The Making of a Firefighter This program follows a diverse group of men and women dealing with the pressures of saving lives and overcoming cultural differences as they compete to become firefighters. Tuesday, September 3 at 11 p.m.

Caught in the Crossfire: Arab Americans in Wartime Three Arab Americans discuss the struggle between loyalty to their adopted country and their homelands in the aftermath of September 11. Thursday, September 5 at 9 p.m.

Campaign Against Terror Secretary of State Colin Powell, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and other key players reveal the behind-the-scenes drama that unfolded as the U.S. and the world responded to the terrorist attacks in this Frontline special. Sunday, September 8 at 9 p.m.

Monday, September 9
Heroes of Ground Zero: New York's Bravest This program captures the many emotions expressed by New York City firefighters after September 11, showing how the men and women of two firehouses continue to put their lives back together. 9 p.m.

Afghanistan Year 1380 This P.O.V. film follows a surgeon and medical coordinator from the human rights group EMERGENCY as they reopen a Kabul hospital that was shut down by the Taliban. 10 p.m.

Tuesday, September 10
Why the Towers Fell
How could buildings so massive be reduced to dust and rubble? NOVA follows a team of forensic engineers as they investigate the causes of the collapse of the World Trade Center. 8 p.m.

Stranded Yanks When 252 planes were grounded in Canada on September 11, hospitable Canadians opened their hearts and homes to these frightened American travelers. The program uses personal accounts to tell an inspiring story of friendship and unity. 9 p.m.

America Rebuilds Given unprecedented access by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, filmmakers document the massive demolition and recovery efforts at Ground Zero. 10 p.m.

Wednesday, September 11
Delaware Tonight: WHYY Remembers 9/11 5 p.m.

Surviving September 11 A New York family who were less than a block away from the World Trade Center on September 11 detail the emotional struggles that have threatened their individual well-being and family life. 7:30 p.m.

A Requiem for September 11 With the downtown Manhattan skyline as a backdrop, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and the Westminster Choir perform Giuseppe Verdi's 1873 Requiem at New Jersey's Liberty State Park. 10 p.m.
