WHYY-FM special salutes America's wartime heroes
Produced by 91FM's Windsor Johnson, the program captures the most touching moments from WHYY's Memorial Day Tribute on the Battleship New Jersey, which was part of WHYY's year-long War Letters Project. Highlights include poignant readings of local war letters collected by WHYY and blended with World War II-era songs performed by members of New Jersey's Westmont Theatre Company, and the first-ever performance of "Oldest Friend," a new song created expressly for the event by Philadelphia native and Broadway composer and lyricist Michael Ogborn. Always includes patriotic music, played by the Shawnee High School Marching Band of Medford, NJ on the deck of the battleship, which greeted more than 500 people from across the Delaware Valley as they gathered for this tribute to families everywhere and in every age. In a special interview, author Andrew Carroll, whose best-selling book War Letters: Extraordinary Correspondence from America's Wars inspired the on and off-air components of WHYY's project and who spoke to those gathered on the battleship, discusses the importance of preserving war letters and why the expressions of love, honor, hope, passion and faith on these pages continue to have meaning in our lives. Always: A Memorial Day Tribute with Letters and Music airs Friday, September 20 at 6 p.m. on WHYY 91FM (90.9).
