You Bet Your GardenPlant a tree this Arbor Day
How: Don't make the hole too deep, but do make it nice and wide -- those roots love to spread out. Remove any metal or plastic, but shred and bury the burlap cover. Fill the hole back up, apply an inch of compost to the top of the soil, then water really well -- a full day of 'drip,' then daily soakings until it rains. Never mound mulch right up against the trunk of a tree. And don't mulch deeper than an inch -- you'll smother the roots! What: Howzabout one of these well-behaved beauties:
Something historic! A Black Locust from Independence Hall, a Sycamore that heard Martin Luther King speak out, Amelia Earhart's Sugar Maple, JFK's Crabapple and even Elvis' Pin Oak! American Forests sells direct descendants of these living legends. For information, call 1-800-320-8733 or visit historictrees.org. You Bet Your Garden can be heard Saturdays at 11 a.m. on WHYY 91FM.
