Our Amazing PlanetWHYY takes an eye-opening look at the future of Earth
How did the myriad species of animals come into existence? The Shape of Life chronicles the dramatic rise of the animal kingdom, exploring the major body plans upon which virtually all animal life is built to answer fundamental questions of animal behavior, body design and evolution. The series pieces together how the earliest animals on Earth led to the astonishing diversity of creatures today. The haunting, underwater "music" of dolphins and whales has long captivated humans. In the Nature special Song of the Earth, Sir David Attenborough leads viewers on a journey to discover how human music originated from the calls, cries and songs of various animals. Pennsylvania has some of the richest farmland in America, yet many of the state's farmers struggle to sustain their land. Farming on the Edge delves into the lives of three Pennsylvania farming families -- one losing its farm to sprawl; one struggling to adapt to development changes; and one able to preserve its farm -- to present an inside look at how economic and societal changes are negatively affecting our food providers. Empty Oceans, Empty Nets examines how humans' consumption of more and more fish each year is depleting the oceans' fisheries. Experts in all marine fields discuss the current state of the world's fish supply, the source of the over-fishing problem, the potential for catastrophe and the measures that need to be taken to reverse this trend. |
