The Hospice Experiment

Redefining Death on 91FM

Overshadowed by the more fervent 1960s social movements for peace, women's liberation and civil rights, a quieter revolution was underway: one led by a handful of middle-aged women who wanted to challenge the medical establishment and change America's treatment of dying and death. These pioneers of hospice care are among those featured in The Hospice Experiment, a new documentary from American Radio Works airing Monday, July 26 at noon on 91FM. During the hour-long program, host John Biewen traces hospice's history through interviews with founders in both Great Britain and the U.S.; speaks with Dr. Elisabeth Kubler Ross (pictured), who became the leading spokesperson for hospice after she published On Death and Dying in 1969; and witnesses a hospice patient's final two months before her death in the spring of 2004.
