About WHYY

How to listen to WHYY's Classical 24 Music Service.

Remember, you don't listen to the WHYY Classical 24 Music Service with your radio!

To listen, you need a television or VCR equiped with Second Audio Program (SAP). Look for a switch on your TV or VCR labeled SAP, MTS, Audio Mode, Second Audio or Second Language. (The switch is often on the TV or VCR remote control).

Tune your TV or VCR to WHYY and push the SAP button. When you push the button, WHYY's broadcast picture will still remain on screen, but Classical 24 will beam through your television (or home theater) speakers, wiping out the TV-12 soundtrack.

SAP reception has been available in video equipment for 10 years, and about half the televisions and video recorders sold in the last two years were so equipped.

The SAP channel is occasionally used to provide Descriptive Video Service (DVS). DVS provides visually impared viewers with additional information about the images on the screen. During selected WHYY programs, the Classical 24 service will be pre-empted for DVS. Among the TV12 programs with DVS are "Nova," "Mystery," "Nature" and "Masterpiece Theatre."
