Dynamic Community Partnerships

As convener of the Caring Community coalition, WHYY has a growing reputation for collaborating and producing content and resources around health and caregiving issues. Entering its sixth year of successful partnership with WHYY, Caring Community is comprised of more than 100 organizations -- academic institutions, non-profit and government agencies, faith-based organizations and healthcare systems in the region. Caring Community provides an essential forum for professionals to work together on initiatives related to chronic illness and end-of-life care, with special attention to caregivers.

Coalition members assist WHYY by defining community needs and outcomes; informing programming content for TV, radio, the Web and community events; and compiling resources and promoting WHYY programming among their constituents. WHYY provides Caring Community with access to cutting-edge technology that allows greater numbers of people the opportunity to participate in creative ways.

Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University, a Caring Community partner, conducted a qualitative study entitled "Television and the Awareness of Caregiver Needs" that confirmed the value of WHYY's Circle of Love television programming about family caregiving.

Older Americans are an enormous untapped resource in addressing the literacy and educational needs of children and the social and civic needs of neighborhoods and institutions. While retirees crave a meaningful role, most community programs that could use their talents have no way of reaching or inspiring these individuals to become involved.

Wider Horizons is a partner with Temple University's Center for Intergenerational Learning, United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania and AARP-PA in Coming of Age, a regional initiative to promote volunteering, learning and leadership among people 50+ and to help organizations build the infrastructure to create meaningful volunteer roles for older people.

Another important partnership this year was WHYY's venture with Hershey's Mill, an active adult community in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Here, WHYY launched a custom TV delivery service in partnership with their residents' own Channel 20. WHYY provides selected content via its digital signal for use on Hershey's Mill Channel 20 in exchange for original content taped by Hershey's Mill. This is a regional model for innovative partnerships and programming for the Wider Horizons audience. Additional partnerships are planned for next year.
