College and Preparatory Courses

Heather Noel from Delaware County Community College's Exton Campus celebrates WHYY's launch of collegeanywhere.org.

WHYY launched a major new adult learning venture this year -- collegeanywhere.org. This groundbreaking experience provides complete college courses video-streamed on the Web, and has a goal of making college courses available anytime, anywhere. This capability makes collegeanywhere.org a national first because it allows students to complete a two-year degree or receive college credit by watching PBS-produced video courses on the Web.

Collegeanywhere.org is the latest evolution in WHYY's long-running Home College Service, which in the last year enrolled 6,200 students for courses broadcast on TV and served nearly 14,550 online course accounts. This service is made possible through WHYY's partnership with the 14 member colleges of our Educational Technology Consortium, software provider WebStudy and PBS. Because of the success of our streamed courses, next year WHYY will roll out a national streaming service for online college courses.

Pre-college students continue to benefit from easy access to GED and workforce training programs provided at 20 sites in four counties in partnership with area Workforce Investment Boards. The video courses, packaged with background and evaluations, are delivered directly to computer desktops using WHYY's digital transmission capabilities. Approximately 400 students have benefited from this innovative program.

Through relationships with additional colleges, growth in digitized courses and expansion of GED programs to Spanish-speaking communities and prison populations, WHYY will continue to serve the needs of adult learners.

WHYY Milestone

FY’04, 20,750 students earned college credit online and through telecourses by enrolling with the 14 participating WHYY Home College Service institutions.
