WHYY PRODUCTION PROVIDES
INTIMATE LOOK AT LOCAL LEGENDS
HOMETOWN LEGENDS, a series
of 30-minute programs celebrating the lives of people from the
Delaware Valley who have become legends, will be broadcast on
Thursday, September 23; Thursday, Thursday, September 30; and
Thursday, October 7 at 8:30 p.m. on WHYY-TV12. Each program
features in-depth interviews with the subjects and their colleagues,
providing an inside-look at the careers and private lives of
urban planner Ed Bacon, scientist Dr. Ruth Patrick and former
college football coach Tubby Raymond.
The first episode, HOMETOWN
LEGENDS: ED BACON, broadcast on Thursday, September 23 at
8:30 p.m., explores the career of Ed Bacon, the outspoken former
executive director of the Philadelphia Planning Commission who
appeared on the cover of Time magazine in 1964 for transforming
the landscape of Philadelphia and the field of city planning.
“I made the resolve in 1936 that come Hell or high water, I
would never budge out of this city, and that I would put my
life’s blood on the line to make it as good as I could,” states
Bacon in the program.
On Thursday, September 30 at 8:30
p.m., HOMETOWN
LEGENDS: RUTH PATRICK explores the life of Dr. Ruth Patrick,
world-renowned scientist and pioneer in the study of freshwater
ecosystems. Well beyond the typical age of retirement, Dr. Patrick
continues her work at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
She says, “I don’t think I’ll ever retire. I will always keep
up my interest in the natural world.”
On Thursday, October
7 at 8:30 p.m., HOMETOWN
LEGENDS: TUBBY RAYMOND tells the story of Tubby Raymond,
former head coach of the University of Delaware and member of
the College Football Hall of Fame. Raymond talks about his nickname
in the program. “I was a little bit chubby and I took offense
to it. I just didn’t like it at all, and of course that made
it stick.”
Phillies announcer Harry
Kalas was previously featured in HOMETOWN LEGENDS. Executive
Producer for HOMETOWN LEGENDS is Trudi Brown. Patty Hartman
is writer and producer.
