The Party's Over -- What Did It All Mean?

The presidential nominating convention ended with George W. Bush's confident acceptance speech. He characterized the "Clinton-Gore" administration as squandering opportunities in a time of great economic prosperity. He also vowed to return dignity to the office of the presidency. Bush added that he expects to wage an equally tough race against the Democrats.

The Democratic National Convention begins Monday, August 14 in Los Angeles.

News Briefs
Democrat Al Gore is expected to name his running mate on Tuesday. He has reportedly narrowed his choices for running mates to six. Among those rumored to be on the list are: Senator Evan Bayh of Indiana, Senator John Edwards of North Carolina, House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt of Missouri, Senator John Kerry of Massachusetts, Senator Joseph Lieberman of Connecticut, and New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen. However, a spokeswoman for Shaheen, the only woman on the list, says she's not interested.

"The World is Watching!"
Swarming protesters, some dressed as goats or clowns, created mayhem in Center City's streets Tuesday afternoon and evening. Police proceeded to arrest hundreds of activists, some of whom left behind a haunting chant. WHYY's Jen Rehill delivers a report from the scene. Listen via Real Audio.

The Duct-Tape Gang
Eight people locked themselves together using PVC pipe, chains and duct tape, just before 4 p.m. yesterday. Hundreds of others joined them at Broad and Spruce to form human chains, playing music and keeping people organized. WHYY's Mhari Saito reports. Listen via Real Audio.
