In 1995, the Delaware Valley Distance Learning Consortium was only an idea, but the response of colleges, faculty members and students has been almost astonishing since then. There is currently no shortage of projects, plans, ideas and discussions and also no question about the fact that institutional partnerships provide an important link to the future.

The Consortium's first project - offering telecourses through the WHYY Home College Service - has attracted twice the number of registered students that was projected, and we look forward to more colleges, more courses and more students in the future. This term's courses will be repeated in the spring, so don't hesitate to call if you would like your institution to be part of it.

The second idea was an all-computer course, which is now in its pilot term. It was developed by Delaware County Community College, and has attracted more than three dozen registered students. The course, interestingly, is about computer programming, and we hope more such courses can be built and offered through the Consortium.

There's more coming, as the emerging media become more and more commonplace and as colleges in the region take those first steps in distance learning projects. For many, it's new, and therefore it may seem risky. However, behind the confusion of the new telecommunications technologies lies the familiar magic of education - the coming together of an inspired and dedicated teacher with a student who is eager to learn.
