Voices In The Family September 200809/01/08 We spend at least a third of our time at work - so - are you happy with what you do? Does your job give you a sense of fulfillment - or is it boring or stressful? On the next Voices in the Family, Dan talks about careers - how to find what's right, when to make a change and how to make it happen, especially in a struggling economy. Our guests are Dr. David Blustein with the Lynch School of Education at Boston College and author of The Psychology of Working and Patricia Peterson, Director of Career Services at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia. 09/08/08 With the constant evolution of technology, teens have seemingly endless options for communicating with family and friends. There are traditional landline phones, cell phones, texting, social network sites, instant messaging, and email and more - and 28% of the entire U.S. teen population uses all of the above. The Pew Internet and American Life Project also reports that 64% of online teens use at least one type of content creation such as YouTube. So what are the effects of this new media on kids? On the next Voices in the Family, Dr. Dan Gottlieb will talk to Dr. Amy Jordan, director of the Media and the Developing Child sector at Annenberg Public Policy Center as well as professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Communication. She is also the co-author of the new edition of Children, Adolescents and the Media. 09/15/08 By the time children are in the ninth grade, one-third of them have already had sex. But just as telling, most of these children feel all of their friends have had sex, which suggests great pressure to do so. On the next Voices in the Family, Dr. Dan Gottlieb and his guests discuss what our children are learning about sex, where they are learning about it and what the implications are. Dr. Gottlieb will be joined by David Landry M.A., senior research associate at The Guttmacher Institute, a nonprofit that conducts research on reproductive health and adolescent sexual behavior trends, and Dr. Ruth Westheimer who has been in the field of sex education since the 1970s. We'll also hear from faculty advisor Jan Johnston and teen peer educator Erica Breve with the NJ Teen Pep organization which is a statewide sexual health promotion and peer education initiative. 09/22/08 Although the majority of the U.S. population looks rather healthy, statistics show a different story. According to a study by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, nearly 1 in 2 people in the United States have a chronic condition. This could be an illness like cancer or rheumatoid arthritis, migranes or MS. But whether the disease is visible or invisible, one thing is sure: its effect on one's life is devastating, and its fall-out on personal relationships can be even more profound. Join Dr. Dan Gottlieb on the next Voices in the Family, when he and his guests discuss the impact that chronic illness has on personal relationships. Dan's guests are: Linda Welsh, psychologist, Director of the Agoraphobia and Anxiety Treatment Center in Bala Cynwyd, Co-director of Professionism Education at HUP, and author of interview Chronic Illness and the Family: A Guide to Living in the Family and Susan McDaniel is a professor of psychiatry and family medicine at University of Rochester. She is a practicing family psychologist and author of the book Counseling Families With Chronic Illness. She is also the editor of the journal Families, Systems and Health. 09/29/08 |
