Teens and the Internet

Listen via Real Audio | mp3

When your kids are online, do you know what they are doing? Are they using the internet to learn, research school assignments, talk to friends, or are they chatting with strangers? Many parents are concerned about the dangers of the internet, and fear that it's a place where sexual predators lurk. During this edition of Voices in the Family, we will listen to excerpts from a recent panel discussion on teens and internet use. It was part of our "In the Spirit of Family" series, presented by WHYY's Children's Service. Dan Gottlieb and a panel of experts will discuss how adolescents can use the internet safely, and how parents can stay involved and know what their teens are doing online.

Male/Female Friendships

Listen via Real Audio | mp3

Can men and women be just friends? Movies like When Harry Met Sally famously say no to this question, but many experts agree that platonic friendships between members of the opposite sex are possible - and they are much more common today than they were a few decades ago. Dan Gottlieb and his guests will discuss the challenges and rewards of male/female friendships. We'll be joined by Linda Sapadin, Ph.D, psychologist in private practice and author, along with Prof. Mike Monsour, PhD of the University of Illinois.

Virtual Worlds

Listen via Real Audio | mp3

During the last seven days, close to half a million people logged into second life, a virtual universe where characters called avatars have homes, businesses, go to parties or on dates, and participate in support groups. Dan Gottlieb and his guests will discuss virtual worlds, why people "live" in them, how they interact with other players and how it affects their "real" lives. We'll also explore the therapeutic possibilities of the virtual world. Our guests are Dr. Nick Yee, Dr. Craig Kerley, and Dr. Albert Rizzo. Yee is a recent PhD graduate from Stanford University where he studied the psychology of online games and virtual environments. He is well-known for an ongoing study that has surveyed over 40,000 online gamers. Kerley is an Atlanta-based psychologist who also practices in Second Life as an avatar. Rizzo is a Research Scientist and research professor at Institute for creative technologies at University of Southern California.

Self-Criticism

Listen via Real Audio | mp3

What do you see when you look in the mirror? Something you like, or just a collection of flaws? Many people criticize themselves all day long, finding fault with everything from their looks to their work performance to the way they interact socially. Sure, setting high standards for oneself is admirable, but when do the standards get too high? Dan Gottlieb and his guests will discuss self-criticism. Our guests are Dr. Richard Heimberg and Dr. Edward Chang. Heimberg is Professor of Psychology at Temple University, and director of the Adult Anxiety Clinic of Temple University. Chang is Associate professor of clinical psychology and psychiatry at University of Michigan, and editor of the book "Self-criticism and self-enhancement: Theory, Research, and Clinical Implications"
