Voices In The Family December 200712/03/07 If a little girl insists that she is really a boy, the parents might think , "it's a phase, it will pass". But what if it doesn't? Some children are affected by what is called Gender Identity Disorder, more commonly known as transgenderism. It is defined by the APA as evidence of persistent discomfort about one's assigned sex or a sense of inappropriateness in the gender role of that sex. The number of transgender children in the U.S. is unknown. However, there are more suicides among transgender teens than the general population. We will hear from 17-year-old high school junior Tye, who was born in girl's body but now lives life as a boy. Tye continues to undergo procedures to change his sex. His parents will share their experience along with Tye. We will also be joined by Dr. Laura Edwards-Leeper, clinical and research psychologist in the gender management service at Children's Hospital Boston, and by Pennsylvania lawyer Ellen Fischer, who will discuss some of the legal issues affecting transgender youth. 12/10/07 We spend about a third of our time on earth sleeping and dreaming. But we rarely remember what our dreams were about. Dan Gottlieb's guest is Rodger Kamenetz. In his new book "The history of last night's dream" he argues that we can gain wisdom and insight from our dreams. He also offers a history of how we have interpreted our dreams in the past. We will also be joined by Dr. Andrew Newberg, Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology and Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania, and William Sharp a doctoral candidate in psychoanalysis at the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis. 12/17/07 Justice can mean many things - a guilty verdict in a court room, a payment, expelling a bully from school. But what do we really want when we ask for justice? Anyone who has experienced injustice knows that it feels like a theft. Something has been taken from one's life, whether it is security, a loved one, or a bodily function. Some experts suggest that what people really want is to have their loss understood and acknowledged. Dan Gottlieb and his guests will take a look at the practice of restorative justice, what it is and how it accomplishes the goal of healing the wounds of injustice. Will also hear about some of its practical applications ranging from schools to nations to our own homes. Our guests are Mary Ellen Mannix and Ted Wachtel. Mannix is Chapter President Pulse of PA, and has initiated PEACE in Healthcare. Ted Wachtel is president of the International Institute for Restorative Practices located Pennsylvania. 12/24/07 12/31/07 Everybody hates a liar - but we all lie! Dan Gottlieb and his guests will explore lying - why we do it, if it's ever okay, and how it affects our relationships. We'll be joined by Dr. Bella DePaulo and Dr. Sabitha Pillai-Friedman. Friedman is a relationship and sex therapist at the Council for Relationships in Philadelphia. DePaulo has studied the psychology of lying extensively. She is a visiting professor at UC Santa Barbara. |
