Heart and Depression

Listen via Real Audio | mp3

We often connect the heart to mood in our language - we speak of a broken heart, or a heavy heart. Science shows that there is a real connection between heart disease and depression. Dan Gottlieb and his guests will discuss the link between these two common conditions, and what families and patients should know. Our guest is Dr. Lawson Wulsin, author of "Treating the Aching Heart." We'll also be joined by Dr. Michael Baime, director of the Penn program for Stress Management.

Children and Mental Health

Listen via Real Audio | mp3

When a child has a mental illness, the whole family is affected. Parents have to fight to get the right diasgnosis and treatment. Other siblings may be getting less attention. So what can families do to get through this difficult situation? We'll hear excerpts from a recent panel discussion on children and mental health. It was part of our "In the Spirit of Family Series" presented by WHYY's Children's Service. We were joined by Karin Borgman Winter, and Catherine Panzarella. Borgman Winter is a psychiatrist with the Children's Hospital of Pennsylvania. Panzarella is a psychologist, and the director of the family and youth support and advocacy Division of the Mental Health Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

World War II Veterans and PTSD

Listen via Real Audio | mp3

When discussing Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in soldiers, experts usually refer to Vietnam or Iraq War veterans. But what about World War II vets? Did they suffer less because they fought a different war, and were considered heroes when they returned home? Dan Gottlieb and his guests will examine PTSD in WWII Vets. Our guest is Dr. Joan Cook, Assistant Professor at Yale University and Psychologist at West Haven, Connecticut VA. She will discuss treating PTSD in late life in WWII Vets. We'll also hear personal accounts from veterans, and find out about a new book called "Myth and the Greatest Generation."
