Voices In The Family March 20073/5/07 Many parents have a hard time saying no to their kids. No to candy bars, no to yet another video game, no to staying an extra hour in the pool. But this two letter word is crucial to a child's development. Our guest will be psychologist and best-selling author Dr. David Walsh. He argues that saying no teaches kids discipline, self-reliance, respect and many other important skills. His latest book is called "No; Why Kids of all ages need to hear it, and ways parents can say it." 3/12/07 Clothing for little girls these days seems more appropriate for teenagers. Their dolls look like sexy grown-ups, and this message continues in music videos and movies. A new report by the American Psychological Association claims that our culture sexualizes girls at young ages, with a devastating impact on their mental health. Dan Gottlieb and his guests will discuss this report, and find out what parents and schools can do. We'll be joined by Dr. Eileen Zurbriggen, lead author on the recent APA study on the sexualization of girls, and associate professor of psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Joining us in the studio is Jane Shure, PhD, she co-founded the "Inside-Outside Self Discovery Program," an eating disorder Prevention Program for middle school girls. We'll also hear about an upcoming rock camp for girls in Philadelphia. 3/19/07 700,000 children in the U.S. have at least one parent deployed overseas for military duty. Many soldiers coming back from war suffer from mental health problems like PTSD, but less than half of them seek help. How does this affect the soldiers and their families? Dan Gottlieb will explore the issues soldiers and their families face. Our guest is Aphrodite Matsakis, PhD, her new book is called "Back from the Front." We will also hear an interview with Danielle Trussoni, she describes a childhood overshadowed by her father's PTSD in her book "Falling Through the Earth." Online Extra 3/26/07 As the presidential primaries are heating up, Americans are thinking about what qualities they want in a leader. Leadership is also key for corporations and organizations world-wide. What does good leadership look like? Dan Gottlieb and his guests will explore what leadership means, and if it can be learned. We'll also discuss a recent study on leadership that examines leadership in modern societies and how leaders develop their traits. Our guests are Robert Sternberg and Michael Useem. Dr. Robert Sternberg is Professor of Psychology at Tuft's University, and the Director of the PACE (Psychology of Abilities, Competencies and Expertise) Center. Michael Useem is the Director of the Center for Leadership and Change Management at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. |
