Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Listen »

When things go wrong, we usually want to fix them. Same with our minds, which is why a lot of traditional therapies are geared toward changing the way we think and behave. But there's a new approach to therapy, which asks us to accept ourselves, rather than trying to change. We'll hear about Acceptance and Commitment therapy, which is achieving promising results. Our guests is Steven Hayes, author of "Get Out of Your Mind & Into Your Life: The New Acceptance & Commitment Therapy." He is also a Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada. We'll also be joined by James Herbert, Associate Professor & Director of Clinical Training in the Department of Psychology at Drexel University.

Thousands of hate crimes are reported every year in the United States, and abroad, mass violence destroys communities from Sudan to Iraq. Martin Oppenheimer, author of the recent book "The Hate Handbook," asks the question "why do people hate"? On the next Voices in the Family, we'll talk with Oppenheimer about hate and bigotry throughout contemporary history and about how people have fought against it. Oppenheimer is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Rutgers University.
