Families and Depression

Listen »

Depression affects families as much as individuals. We know that it's hereditary so that children of depressed parents are at risk for depression themselves. But there are also learned behaviors to consider. How does depression affect child rearing practices or a parent's worldview?~ And what can a parent do if they suspect their child may be depressed? And how to you deal with an elderly family member who seems depressed but insists that they are just fine? We'll hear excerpts from a recent panel discussion on depression and families. Dan Gottlieb and his guests discussed prevention, treatment, and how to talk about the illness openly. Our guests were ~Dr. Joel Streim, Dr. Michael DeStefano, and Dr. Guy Diamond. Streim is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia VA Medical Center, where he serves as Director of the Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Training Program. DeStefano is the Program Director of Child and Adolescent Services, at the Belmont Center for Comprehensive Treatment. Diamond is the director of the center for family intervention science at CHOP.
