Holistic Medicine / Energy Psychology

Western physicians are becoming increasingly interested in Eastern medicine, and the connection between mind and body. Approaches like meditation are being studied and researched, and the results are raising eyebrows. Dan Gottlieb and his guests will discuss an emerging field called "energy psychology" and hear about an upcoming conference on holistic medicine. Our guests are Dr. Daniel Monti and Dr. Robert Anderson. Monti is the Medical and Executive Director of the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center for Integrative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Communicating with Teens

Communicating with teenagers can be like learning to speak another language. Parents want what they think is best for their kids. They worry about their teens' future, their safety and well being. They struggle between wanting to be involved in their teens' lives and not alienating them. Teenagers, on the other hand, want to explore the independence that comes with growing into an adult. We'll hear excerpts from a panel discussion on teens and communication, which was part of our "In the Spirit of Family" series, presented by WHYY's Children's Service. Our guest was Dr. David Walsh, president and founder of the National Institute on Media and the Family. He has written several books. His most recent is Why Do They Act That Way?: A Survival Guide to the Adolescent Brain for You and Your Teen. Listen »

Couples sometimes turn to counseling to save a troubled marriage. But does it work? According to one study, two years after ending marriage therapy, a quarter of couples say they were worse off than where they started. We'll look at what makes a marriage work, the effectiveness of counseling and other approaches like marriage education courses. Our guest is Dr. April Westfall. She is a clinical psychologist, staff therapist and Director of Clinical Services at the Council for Relationships. Listen »

Encore Presentation: Smashed

By the time Koren Zailckas started college, she had already experienced several black-outs from drinking, and had spent a night in the emergency room for alcohol poisoning. Still, she kept drinking, joining a sorority, and embarking on four years of alcohol-soaked parties and blurred memories. Zailckas describes her love-affair with alcohol and her decision to quit drinking in her memoir, Smashed. Zailckas also discusses the social framework of girls, drinking, shame, and sexual exploitation. We'll also be joined by Dr. Jeremy Frank, a licensed psychologist and certified addiction counselor with a private practice in Philadelphia. He is the Coordinator of Campus Alcohol and Substance Awareness at Temple University in Philadelphia. Listen »
