Voices In The Family October 2004 Voices In The Family shows10/4/04 Despite better a better scientific understanding and treatment options for mental illness, the stigma remains. Many people suffering from mental illnesses have no access to treatment, or are discriminated against in the workplace. Dr. Dan Gottlieb and his guests will discuss the cost of this stigma to our society, and what is being done to remove it. Our guests are Sylvia Axelrod, executive director of the New Jersey chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) and Robin Cunningham. Axelrod will discuss NAMI New Jersey's "Freedom from Stigma Campaign" and Cunningham, a retired businessman, will speak about living with schizophrenia. October is domestic violence awareness month, and during this hour, we'll hear excerpts from a panel discussion on domestic violence hosted by the University of Pennsylvania's School of Social Work. The panelists were Cynthia Figueroa from Women Against Abuse, Patricia Giorgio Fox, Deputy Police Commissioner, Ana Rodrigues, Police Officer and domestic violence survivor, and Chris Mallios, Chief of the Sexual Assault Unit for Philadelphia's District Attorney's Office. The discussion was part of a conference entitled Finding New Directions to Respond to Intimate Violence held in collaboration with the Philadelphia Mayor's Task Force on Domestic Violence. Listen » 10/18/04 In 1976, along with Mairead Maguire, Betty Williams was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work against violence in her native Northern Ireland. Together, Williams and Maguire founded the Community of Peace People, an organization which is still involved in the betterment of life in Northern Ireland. Williams has traveled all over the world in her efforts to create a better world for children. Williams serves currently as President of World Centers of Compassion for Children. In her candid interview with Dan Gottlieb, Williams describes her work, her passion, and what keeps her going in her efforts. She also discusses her recent trip to Iraq where investigated how the war has affected the lives of children. Listen » 10/25/04 People always say "Don't talk about politics or religion!"
