Voices In The Family

May 2004 Voices In The Family shows

5/3/04
Personality

We use the term "personality" to describe somebody's attitude, and outlook on life, and we often make broad generalizations. There's the "Type A" personality, or the over-achiever. Companies try to evaluate people's personality to make hiring decision. Join Dan Gottlieb for a discussion about personality: how is it formed, and how much do we really know about it? Our guests are: Paul T. Costa, co-founder of the Big Five or Five Factor personality model, Rob LaPlante, a casting director who worked on programs like the Apprentice, and James Masterson, founder of Masterson Institute in NYC for the research and treatment of personality disorders. We'll also be joined by Leslie Mayer, executive coach and CEO trainer. Listen »

The Explosive Child

Ask any parent and they'll tell you, all children "act out" sometimes. Usually such episodes are viewed as necessary stages of development and testing boundaries. But there are children with explosive behavioral disorders, whose outbursts are much more frequent and severe. Their behavior seems fueled by frustration and rage, and often is destructive and violent. Dan Gottlieb's guest is Dr. Ross Greene, author of The Explosive Child. Greene offers new coping strategies for families with explosive children, and ways to interact in ways that are less frustrating for parents and children.

Ross W. Greene, Ph.D. will be the keynote speaker at Foundations Behavioral Health's annual professional development seminar on Friday, May 14, 2004 from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel, 2400 Old Lincoln Highway @ U.S. Rt. 1 in Trevose, PA. Adolescents and Addiction

Studies show that treatment for substance abuse is effective and reduces criminal activity. Treatment for addicted adolescents could prevent a myriad of future problems. But, what kind of treatment works best for adolescents? And is it available to those who seek it? Join Dan Gottlieb for the next Voices in the Family when we continue our series on adolescents and addiction. We'll be joined by two experts from the Caron Foundation in Pennsylvania. Janice Styer is an Addiction Counselor, and Scott Marshall is Clinical Coordinator for Treatment. We'll also hear from Steven Belenko, he is a senior scientist at the Treatment Research Institute at the University of Pennsylvania. Listen »

5/24/04
Prisoner Abuse Scandal

The investigation of the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal is focused on assigning blame for what happened. But whether the guards acted on orders or not, the deeper question is why are humans so readily willing to hurt others? Dan Gottlieb and his guests will explore how everyday people are driven to humiliate, torture and even kill. We'll be joined by Dr. Ervin Staub, author of "The Roots of Evil." Staub has studied the psychology of collective violence, genocide, and the role of bystanders. We'll also hear from Dr. Craig Haney, a University of California psychology professor and outspoken advocate of prison reform, and Dr. Jay Lockenour, a Temple History professor who specializes in studying the social and cultural impact of warfare.
