November 2002 Voices In The Family shows

Friendship

There are thousands of hallmark cards that describe what friends mean to us - love, support, good times, laughter. As adults, we know that true friends are priceless - but when do we begin to understand what friendship really means? Dan Gottlieb's guest is Dr. Kenneth Rubin, author of The Friendship Factor. They will discuss how children make friends and how this special bond affects their development. Listen »

Spiritual Transformation

An addict becomes a born-again Christian in recovery. A high-powered executive quits her job and devotes her life to the study of Buddhism. There are moments when people find spirituality, come in contact with a higher being - and everything changes. During this special edition of Voices in the Family, we'll hear excerpts from a recent panel discussion exploring the phenomenon of Spiritual Transformation. What is it? Does it last? How does it affect individuals and their psyche? We'll be joined by world-renowned scholars and researchers in the field, among them George Gallup, Chairman of The George H. Gallup International Institute and Robert A.F. Thurman, professor of Buddhist Studies at Columbia University. The panel discussion concluded a conference on Spiritual Transformation in Philadelphia, hosted and organized by the Metanexus Institute. Listen »

Worry

As the holidays approach, many people are worried about their family situations, money, what gifts to get and so on. No matter what time of year, we spend a good amount of time each day worrying. Whether it's justified or unnecessary, worrying can take a lot of time and energy. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss the effects of worrying on the next Voices in the Family. He'll also explore how we can learn how to worry less! His guest is psychologist Dr. Edward Hallowell, author of Worry, Controlling It and Using It Wisely. Listen »

Families against Violence

Violence in the Middle East has become almost an everyday occurrence. It is overwhelming and frightening - the situation seems hopeless. Arguments are typically waged from a political perspective, and we forget about the human suffering and the lives that are destroyed. Dr. Dan Gottlieb recently met up with members of the Parents' Circle, a group of Israeli and Palestinian families that have lost loved ones in this ongoing war. We'll hear excerpts of a discussion with Amiram Goldin, whose son was recently killed by a suicide bomber, and Palestinian educator Dr. Rihab Essaw who has lost her brother, nephew and mother.
