Voices In The Family December 2000 Voices In The Family shows12/4/00 Well-being may well be the most popular feeling of the new millennium. Everybody is seeking it, commercials promise it, and companies are marketing a myriad of products that are supposed to increase our overall feeling of comfort. Join Dr. Dan Gottlieb for a discussion on well-being - he'll explore an approach called "Positive Psychology" that focuses on fostering mental health. Our guests are Dr. Barbara Frederickson from the University of Michigan, and Dr. Ed Diener from the University of Illinois. Listen » 12/11/00 The more scientists learn about specific genes, the more they can predict the health of a human being - but what does this knowledge mean to our society? What do parents do who know that they have a strong likelihood of passing on a genetic disease to their children? Or an expecting mother who has been told that her baby will be born with a mental or physical disability? Dr. Dan Gottlieb's guest is Dr. Max Muenke, a geneticist with the Human Genome Project in Washington. We will also hear from a mother whose son suffers from the genetic disorder Opitz G BBB, and talk with a genetic counselor. Listen » 12/18/00 The holiday season is a time to celebrate, to be with friends and family, and to remember those who have passed on. Much of what we do during the holidays is guided by ritual; religious rituals, family rituals and so on. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss the meaning and importance of rituals with Meg Cox, author of The Heart of a Family. Are you still looking for children's books to give as presents this holiday season? Later on the show, we'll talk about the best children's books with New York Times book critic Eden Ross Lipson. Listen » 12/25/00 |
