Digital Childhood

Most children today spend hours in front of a computer; surfing the internet, chatting with friends, or playing computer games. The rest of the day is often filled with television programs. Yet experts know very little about the effects of media exposure on children. Some parents suspect that shortened attention spans and certain learning disorders are caused by too much TV and computer exposure, but there are no scientific studies to prove or disprove these assumptions. A recent national conference hosted by the American Psychological Association addressed these issues, and focused on what scientists should study in decades to come. Dr. Dan Gottlieb is joined by several panelists from this conference, they will discuss the effects of "Digital Childhood." For more information on this conference check the website at www.decadeofbehavior.org Listen »

Dr. Gottlieb will discuss this report and the mental health needs of children. He is joined by Dr. Michael Silver and Troy Brindle of Friends Hospital, they head the recently opened Child and Adolescent Program at Friends. Ending Child Sexual Abuse

In ninety percent of child sexual abuse cases, the offender is someone the child knows and trusts, which often makes intervention even harder. Dan Gottlieb will discuss an innovative new program called "Stop it Now." The organization raises awareness through extensive media campaigns, encourages offenders to seek treatment, and works with families and children to confront abusers. We'll be joined by the director for the Philadelphia program, Evan Smith, and the founder of Stop it Now, Fran Henry. We will also hear from an ex-offender, and discuss treatment options for sex offenders. Listen »
