Recipes for How To Eat Like a Republican

Hot Damn Peaches
Serves 2-3

  • Sesame seeds, about 1/2 to 1 teaspoon per peach half
  • One 15-ounce can peach halves, freestones preferably, drained
  • One .7-ounce package Good Seasons Italian dressing dry mix
  • 1/4 cup grated sharp Cheddar cheese

Preheat broiler.

Sprinkle the peach halves with the dry seasoning, fill the cavities with grated cheese, and sprinkle seeds over all. Watch carefully and stick peaches under the broiler until the cheese melts and blisters and the seeds are brown. These are too silly to be this good, but they are.

World's Best Slaw
Serves 6-8

  • 1 large head of cabbage, shredded very fine
  • 2 red onions, also shredded fine
  • 1 tablespoon celery SEED (not salt), more if it seems skimpy
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons mustard (yellow is the original, but Dijon is better I think)
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt

In a large bowl, toss the cabbage and onions well with your hands. Sprinkle in the celery seed--it should be visible, but not overwhelming. Chill. In a small saucepan, combine all the other ingredients and bring to boil. Pour over the cold cabbage mixture.
