Georgia Peach Cobbler

Preheat the oven to 350 F. Place the peach slices in a mixing bowl, sprinkle 1 cup of the sugar over and set aside. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the flour with the remaining 1 cup of sugar, the baking powder and salt. Add the milk and mix well to form a batter.
Melt the butter in a standard baking dish, pour in the batter, and arrange the peaches on top. Do not stir. Transfer to the oven and bake for 1 hour, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The batter will puff up around the peaches. Remove and spoon onto 4 warm serving plates.
