Kids and Medications

There's a growing controversy the use of psychiatric medications with children. There is ample evidence that they help kids who have been diagnosed with disorders like attention deficit or depression. But some experts argue that these drugs are over-prescribed, and can have disastrous results. Our guest is Dr. Moira Rynn. She is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and the Medical Director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program at the University of Pennsylvania. We'll also hear from Dr. David Stein, author of Stop Medicating, Start Parenting.

By the time Koren Zailckas started college, she had already experienced several black-outs from drinking, and had spent a night in the emergency room for alcohol poisoning. Still, she kept drinking, joining a sorority, and embarking on four years of alcohol-soaked parties and blurred memories. Zailckas describes her love-affair with alcohol and her decision to quit drinking in her memoir, Smashed. Zailckas also discusses the social framework of girls, drinking, shame, and sexual exploitation. We'll also be joined by Dr. Jeremy Frank, a licensed psychologist and certified addiction counselor with a private practice in Philadelphia. He is the Coordinator of Campus Alcohol and Substance Awareness at Temple University in Philadelphia. .

Trauma and Recovery

Psychoanalyst Henri Parens was rescued from Nazi-occupied France as a child and brought to the United States, where he became an authority on violence in children. We'll hear about Parens' life, and how being a Holocaust survivor shaped his entire life and career. Parens' book is called Renewal of Life: Healing from the Holocaust. We'll also discuss treating trauma, with Bea Hollander Goldfein. She is a clinical psychologist with the Council for Relationships in Philadelphia, and the director of the "Transcending Trauma" Project.

One in a 166 children today has an Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it the most widely diagnosed developmental disorder in the nation. Dan Gottlieb and his guests will discuss autism, its incidence, and treatment possibilities. We'll also hear about a new approach to research that aims to diagnose autism at a very early age. Our guest is Dr. Bob Naseef, psychologist and author of Special Children, Challenged Parents. We'll also hear from Dr. Wendy Stone, a researcher and professor at Vanderbilt University, who works in early detection. Later on the show, we'll discuss David Kirby's book Evidence of Harm.
