Children and Overscheduling

Listen via Real Audio
As parents, we want to offer our children opportunities to succeed. So - we help them achieve academically, drive them to endless sport practices, and let them learn an instrument. As a result, many children lead incredibly hectic, productive lives, and feel stressed. How can we find balance in our lives, help our children to learn and achieve without driving them (and us) to exhaustion? We'll hear a panel discussion taped at Philadelphia's Please touch Museum. This was the first part of the WHYY Children's Service series "In the Spirit of Family." Dan Gottlieb's guests are Dr. Kathy Hirsh Pasek, and Dr. Roberta Michnik Golinkoff. They have written" Einstein didn't use Flashcards."

Stigma of Obesity

Listen via Real Audio
The news are full of stories about the increase in obesity in our society. Most of us know about the physical health risks associated with obesity - but what about the psychological impact of obesity? A new study on the stigma of obesity shows that negative opinions of people who are overweight are far more pervasive than previously believed. We'll discuss the stigma of obesity with Dr. Marlene Schwartz, and Molly Kellog. Schwartz is Co-Director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders, Kellog is a Registered dietitian and therapist in private practice in Pennsylvania. We'll also visit the Body Balance Program at Philadelphia's Renfrew Center.

His guest is Robert Putnam, author of "Better Together." We'll also be joined by Dr. Novella Keith, Professor of Urban Education at Temple University.
