Special Education
Listen via Real Audio
More and more children are diagnosed with learning disabilities and attention disorders. They require special services to manage school - some have their own aides during classes, others have counselors guide them through the entire day. But who's picking up the tap for these services? And how does it affect schools in general? Our guests are Nancy Erskin, director of Special Education for the Philadelphia School District, and Terry Bergman, PhD, head of school at the Quaker School at Horsham, PA. We'll also hear from lawyer Dennis McAndrews, and discuss the new national "No Child left Behind" program with Robert Pasternack, Assistant Secretary for Special Education.

Common Shock
Listen via Real Audio
People witness violence every day. On the anniversary of September 11, we watched the twin towers fall again and again, and relived the sadness and loss. But does witnessing violence on TV or in person have a long-term effect on mental health? Join Dr. Dan Gottlieb for the next Voices in the Family, when he discusses a new book called "Common Shock."

Money, Debt and Materialism
Listen via Real Audio
With personal bankruptcy at an all-time high, it's mostly the middle class that gets trapped. According to a new Harvard study, 92 percent of the record 1.6 million filers last year were middle class. So - are Americans not making enough money to support their families, or are we spending too much? Dan Gottlieb will discuss money, cost of living, debt, and materialism with his guests. We'll hear from Amelia Warren Tyagi, co-author of "The Two-Income Trap:Why Middle Class Mothers and Fathers are Going Broke." We'll also be joined by Iain Levinson author of "The Working Stiff's Manifesto." Our last guest is Dr. Tim Kasser, professor of Psychology at Knox College, he has written "The High Price of Materialism."
