Talking to Children About War

The threat of war and terrorism has everybody on edge - and it is difficult to fathom the possible outcome of a conflict with Iraq. There's constant talk about biological warfare, dirty bombs, small pox, and even nuclear missiles. Children are exposed to these news and also sense their parents' anxiety. How can parents talk to their children about war and terrorism? Dr. Gottlieb's guests are Dr. Marlene Watson and Dr. Norbert Wetzel. Watson is the director of couples and family therapy at Drexel University. Wetzel is director of training at the Center for Family, Community, and Social Justice, in Princeton, New Jersey.

TV and Violence

Children are exposed to violence on TV every day - and often, they identify with violent characters. Experts have disagreed for decades whether TV violence makes children more aggressive or not. A new 15-year study that has just been published offers some clear answers. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss the findings with the lead investigator, Dr. Rowell Huesmann of the University of Michigan. We'll also be joined by Dr. Amy Jordan, director of research on children and media at the Annenberg Public Policy Center.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders affect millions of Americans, young children report being concerned about their weight, and the diet industry is a 50 billion dollar enterprise. Are Americans obsessed with appearance or do the causes for eating disorders lie much deeper? Dan Gottlieb will take a look at new research on eating disorders, the causes, treatment and prognosis. We'll also discuss the growing incidence of eating disorders in midlife. Our guests are Shari Botwin and Dr. Margo Maine. Botwin is a therapist in New Jersey and has written "Free at Last, The Power of Relationships in Overcoming Trauma, Abuse and Eating Disorders. " Maine is a psychologist who runs an eating disorder treatment program in Connecticut.
