Solitude and Meditation

In our hectic world, even a few seconds of silence often seem like an eternity. Thanks to cell phones, pagers and e-mail, we're constantly talking, staying in touch, and focusing on all the things that go on around us. Solitude and silence are hard to come by, but many experts argue that reflecting on one's life in peace and quiet can be a very powerful experience. Join Dr. Dan Gottlieb for a discussion on solitude and meditation. We'll hear from Reverend Chris Moore, author of "Solitude, A Neglected Path to God." We'll also be joined by S.N. Goenka, a teacher of Vipassana Meditation. He has been teaching all over the world, and has recently brought his techniques to high-security prisons to work with inmates.

Motherland

During the terrors of the Nazi regime, many Jewish children in Germany were sent to safety in the United States. One of them was 12-year-old Edith Westerfeld. Her parents desperately wanted to protect her from the increasing anti-Semitism, but could not leave themselves. Edith never saw her parents again, and the loss of her family and homeland would haunt her for the next sixty years. Finally, together with her daughter, writer Fern Schumer Chapman, Edith embarked on a powerful physical and spiritual journey back to her birthplace. Chapman chronicled this emotional journey in her book: "Motherland" Edith and Fern will join us to talk about facing painful memories and finding ways to forgive and heal.

Brain Injury

Every 21 seconds, a person in the United States sustains a brain injury. These injuries often lead to serious physical and mental disabilities. Dr. Dan Gottlieb and his guests will discuss how individuals and families can cope with the effects of brain injury. We'll hear from Dr. John Whyte, director of Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute in Philadelphia and Sol Mogerman, a Canadian therapist who still suffers the effects of a brain injury sustained in the 1980's. Mogerman has written "Objects In Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear."
