Concept of Legal Insanity

The murder trial of Houston mother Andrea Yates has stirred a heated debate about the insanity defense. Was Yates unable to judge her actions when she drowned her children? Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss insanity - how it has been defined and interpreted in psychology, law, and religion, and how we understand it today. His guests are Temple Law Professor Edward Ohbaum and Psychiatrist Darold Treffert with St. Agnes Hospital in Font Du Lac, Wisconsin. We'll also be joined by forensic psychologist Dr. Allan Tepper.

Childhood Obesity

61 percent of American adults are either overweight or obese - and that means that our children are also at grave risk for obesity. Kids imitate their parents' eating and exercise habits. In addition, children today spend more time in front of the TV and computer than ever before. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss childhood obesity with Dr. Miles Faith and Dr. Robert Berkowitz. Faith is professor of Psychology at Columbia University. Berkowitz is the medical director of the weight and eating disorders program at the University of Pennsylvania. We'll look at who's at risk, and discuss the physical and psychological impact..

Therapy, Race and Culture

Finding a therapist can be difficult. There are issues of trust, like and dislike, and concerns about insurance and location. This issues can get even more complicated if you're Black, Asian or Hispanic. The latest surveys show minority psychotherapists are under-represented in the population, and minority clients often feel that their therapists don't understand their culture and background. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss breaking down the barriers of race and culture in therapy with Psychologist Takako Suzuki and Psychiatrist Kimberley E.Walker.

Passover Special

Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose - that's how the famous song goes, but what does "freedom" really mean? Dr. Dan Gottlieb will explore the concept from different perspectives for a Passover Special on Voices in the Family. What does freedom mean after the tragic events of September 11? We'll hear from Greg Manning, whose wife was severely injured during the attack on the World Trade Center. We'll also be joined by Tom Martinez, a former member of a hate group who will discuss freedom from hate and prejudice. He has written "Brotherhood of Murder." Father Michael Doyle from Camden's Sacred Heart Church joins us to speak about his struggle to free his city from debilitating poverty.
