Effects of Terrorism

Listen via Real Audio
Mental Health professionals have been high in demand since the terrorist attacks of September 11, counseling grieving workers, families and children. Are counseling sessions enough during a time of sadness, anxiety and fear? Our guest is Dr. Rona Fields, a Washington psychologist who has studied the effects of terrorism for over 30 years. We'll also hear from Surgeon General David Satcher, and learn about one woman's journey from anger and hatred to forgiveness and coping.

Childhood

Listen via Real Audio
Many children have more hectic schedules than their parents - they have activities, play dates, and are under pressure to succeed academically. Children also have to deal with the impact of violence in their schools and neighborhoods, and more recently, with the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on America. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss childhood and how children deal with trauma. His guest is Dr. James Garbarino, a renowned expert on the impact of violence on child development.

A Meaningful Life

Listen via Real Audio
America has entered a war on terrorism, and most of us are worried about the ongoing threat of terrorist attacks, or bio terrorism. In situations like this, our lives suddenly may feel meaningless and trivial. Your job suddenly isn't worth working 60 hours a week anymore, and the collector's item you almost bought last month has lost its appeal. What is it that gives our lives meaning, and makes us feel connected to our communities? Dr. Gottlieb's guest is Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of "Living a Life that Matters."

Healing the Soul

Listen via Real Audio
As researchers learn more about mental illness, the brain and chemical imbalances, many patients are taking medications instead of going through long-term therapy. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will be joined by Dr. Elio Frattaroli, author of "Healing the Soul in the Age of the Brain." He argues that our world is so focused on finding quick fixes for our problems that we have lost touch with our souls. Later on the show we'll hear from Psychiatrist Paul Linde. Following his wife to Africa, he found himself working in Zimbabwe's capital as an attending psychiatrist at Harare Central Hospital. Lince has described his experience in a new book called "Of Spirits and Madeness."

Spirituality In Everyday Life

Listen via Real Audio
We hear more and more about spirituality, and today's scientists are investigating how spirituality affects our health, marriages, work life and so on. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss spiritual principles for every day life with Greg Martin, author of "The Buddha in Your Mirror." We'll hear from psychologist Dr. Bruce Faye who transfers his religious beliefs into the world of business, and we'll be joined by Rabbi Barry Schwartz who is actively involved in Jewish environmentalism.
