Understanding PMDD

Listen via Real Audio
You have probably seen commercials for a new medication recommended to treat a disorder called PMDD, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It is a severe form of PMS, and four million women are said to suffer from it, but the diagnosis is very controversial. Dr. Dan Gottlieb is joined by women who treat PMDD, and others who argue that it does not exist. His guests are PMDD researcher Dr. Ellen Freeman of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Dr. Eileen Engle, Medical Director of Women's Services at Doylestown Hospital, and Dr. Paula Caplan, author of "They Say You're Crazy."

Sexuality in Mid-Life

Listen via Real Audio
With Valentine's Day on the way, we all have love on our minds, but maybe the excitement and passion is missing in your relationship. Many couples over forty report that physical and emotional changes are affecting their intimate relationships. Some people are unhappy with their appearance, and suspect that their partner doesn't find them attractive anymore, others couples lose interest in each other, and in sex. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss these changes and how we can overcome them with Dr. David Altman author of the new book "Making Love the Way We Used to ...or Better: Secrets to Satisfying Midlife Sexuality."

Schizophrenia

Listen via Real Audio
Schizophrenia is the most common serious brain disorder and it may be the most difficult one to understand. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss life with schizophrenia with a man who has lived with this illness for most of his life, and a mother whose son's illness changed their family life forever. Dr. Raquel Gur from the University of Pennsylvania will join us to talk about research and treatment, and we'll hear about a conference on mental health and stigma.

Women and Addiction

Listen via Real Audio
Experts estimate that 18 percent of all US women will have an alcohol or chemical dependency problem in their lives. Female addicts are often misdiagnosed, and they are less likely than men to receive treatment. A national conference in Philadelphia on March 9th and 10th entitled "Women Healing" will address issues of addiction and the role of gender differences, stigma, and the impact on families. Dr. Dan Gottlieb is joined by two keynote speakers from this conference, Dr. Eileen Beyer and Sharon Hartman. Beyer is Director of Women's Services, Hartman is the Director of Adult Women's Programs at the Caron Foundation. For more information on this conference, please call 1-888-257-7800 ext. 4429 or 4462
