Back to School Special: Gender Differences and Learning

You've heard the saying more than once: Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars. When it comes to differences between men and women, many confusing theories exist; men are better in sciences, women are more creative, and tend to excel in languages - but how many of these assumptions can be scientifically proven? Do boys and girls learn differently, and do better in different subject matters? Or do our schools short-change girls as a study by the Association of American University Women alleges? Join Dr. Gottlieb for this important discussion, his guest is Dr. Reuben Gur, brain researcher at the University of Pennsylvania. Gur will explore the actual differences between men's brains and women's brains, and explain their implications. We will also be joined by Dr. Pamela Haag director of research of the AAUW, and Dr. Carole Beal, author of "Boys and Girls: The Development of Gender Roles."

The Circle of Life

Listen via Real Audio
Throughout most of our lives, we know that we have to die. Yet few of us prepare for this day, or discuss our wishes with family members. Join Dr. Dan Gottlieb for "The Circle of Life" when we'll discuss how people deal with life and death in the light of terminal illness, how we first learn about death, and how today's health care professionals think about death and dying. Ellen Kushner, host of WGBH's "Sound and Spirit" joins Dr. Gottlieb to explore how other cultures and religions treat death and mourning.

In addition to its Monday broadcast time, this Special airs in conjunction Bill Moyers' PBS television special "On Our Own Terms - Moyers on Dying," on Sunday, September 10th, at 8pm, an hour prior to the Moyers broadcast.

Also join Dr. Dan Gottlieb every night after the Moyers' series on PBS for Community Voices on 91 FM, call in with your questions and comments, as Gottlieb discusses death and dying with local experts and people interviewed for the Moyers series.

Grandparents raising Grandchildren

Listen via Real Audio
Almost four million children in the US are being raised by their grandparents. For the grandparents, this means a "second shift" in parenting, instead of traveling, retirement, or taking things easy. It also places an intense emotional and financial burden on the grandparents. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will be joined by nationally recognized experts in the field, and we'll also hear from grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.

Immigrants held in Prisons

Listen via Real Audio
Under a new Federal law, thousands of asylum seekers and immigrants with prior criminal convictions are being detained in prisons across the US. Families, adults, and children are held until the day of their deportation arrives. Among the population, mental health issues are common, often stemming from trauma, torture, or persecution. Dr. Dan Gottlieb will discuss this invisible population with lawyers and mental health experts.
