Career Changes After Fifty

Listen via Real Audio
People around the age of fifty used to start thinking about retirement. But with the unstable future of Social Security, and the rapidly changing job market, more and more people are making significant career moves in the later years of their lives - and on this edition of Voices in the Family, Dr. Dan Gottlieb discusses the implications and rewards of career changes after fifty. His guests are Ruth Campbell and Joseph Cipolla, career counselors with Delaware County Community College, who specialize in helping people over fifty make major career transitions. We'll also hear from people who have made significant changes in their careers and lives.

How Therapy Heals

Listen via Real Audio
Mental Health topics are more prominent in the news than ever before, but psychotherapy still seems to be a myth to many Americans. Many doubt that "just talking about something" can really help people, and are confused about the different therapies that are available today. Dr. Gottlieb will explore how therapy helps people heal; we are joined by a woman who managed to resolve her own history of abuse and family alcoholism through long-term therapy. We will also be joined by Dr. Willard Gaylin, professor of Psychiatry at the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the author of "Talk is not Enough."

Difficult Conversations

Listen via Real Audio
Imagine some of the most intimidating conversations you have had in your life. Asking for a raise, confessing to your partner that you are unhappy, refusing the romantic offers of a co-worker - how did you handle these situations, and were you satisfied with the outcome? Most of us spend sleepless nights before approaching a sticky issue, or avoid the situation entirely. Members of the Harvard Negotiation Project have published their findings on navigating through situations like these in a new book called "Difficult Conversations, How to Discuss What Matters Most." Sheila Heen and Doug Stone join Dr. Dan Gottlieb to explore how tough topics can be resolved in constructive conversations.

Resilience

Listen via Real Audio
A Vietnam Veteran who was severely injured in combat, and went on to become a psychologist. A young girl who was almost killed by the Russian KGB, who is now a happy teenager, and excellent student. A former crack-addict who was homeless, but has overcome his addiction and has become an outreach counselor. What do they have in common? They are all resilient. People from all walks of life are faced with challenges that test their ability to cope; from physical limitations, to mental illness, to drug abuse, or prejudice. Being resilient means having the ability to overcome adversity and gain strength from misfortune. Fact is, some people are better adapted to handle difficult situations than others - but what are the reasons for this? Is it an acquired or natural ability? This program was taped before a live audience, we'll hear from four people who live or have lived through various hardships and are considered resilient. We will also be joined by Dr. Hope Hill, a nationally recognized expert in the field of resilience, who will share the latest research and discoveries on the topic.
